NOTE all other information from Stephen Bartlett (email Mar 2015). She was always known as Syl (Sylvia) except in official documents.. He also states Their eldest son Henry Francis Bartlett was born at 32 Winchester Avenue in Brondesbury Park, London on 8 March 1916 (Jun 1916 Willesden 3A, 557). Frank enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company (Private, Reg No. 9312) on 14 November 1916 and served on the NE Italian front until the end of the war. Frank and Syl’s second son John Evelyn Bartlett was born in Brondesbury Park in 1924 (Dec 1924 Willesden 3A, 491).
Frank and Syl eventually moved to a house (“Glendale”, 200 East End Road) in East Finchley, where they brought up their sons and lived for the rest of their lives. Frank died in retirement in 1952 (Sep 1952 Hendon 5E, 342) and Syl continued to live in East Finchley (where I remember visiting her on a number of occasions during my childhood) until she died in 1977 (Sep 1977 Barnet 11, 253). She was a tiny woman with a ready laugh and I remember that she retained a slight Northants “burr” to her speech.
Her elder son Henry (educated at St Paul’s school, London and the Queen’s College, Oxford) went to California in 1938 to take up a Commonwealth Fellowship at UCal Berkeley and joined the British embassy in Washington on the outbreak of WW2. He had a post-war career in the diplomatic service, eventually becoming Ambassador in Paraguay. Following this, he retired with his wife to Brisbane, where he died on 17 Feb 2014. I kept up correspondence with him during his last years and some details in letters from 2010-2013 provide further information about Charles Vincent Savage’s children.
Henry recalls that his mother (and grandmother Esther Elizabeth Savage, who lived with them in Brondesbury Park during his childhood until she died - Mar 1929 Willesden 3A, 612 - age given as76, but this should be 81) never spoke of Charles Vincent Savage. He believed that CVS had left his wife and children and emigrated to the United States at some time before the first world war. (I have, however, been unable to find any record of him in the US.) Possibly the fact that he was living apart from them at the time of the 1901 census may indicate a breakdown in marital relations, but this is speculation.
Henry further recalls that his “Aunt Molly” (Bessie Marguerite Savage) married a Dutchman Herman Tas and lived at 107 Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale (see below).
He had a further aunt (Dora) who married a civil engineer (Samuel Allibon) and lived in Romford, Essex. He was employed by Roneo until laid off during the slump of 1929-1931 (see below).
These reminiscences agree with details I have found during my family history research.:
