After the war he returned to dairy farming in Pukeoware, a district near Waiuku. He served in several local committees and was in demand as a judge at school calf
clubs. After her husbands death Jessie moved to Marine Parade in Howick where her daughter Rosemary lived nearby. Of a retiring nature Jessie enjoyed pottering in her garden. She seldom returned from visiting family or friends without some cuttings from their gardens.

'Their married life began at Hamilton, Jack being a driver for a contractor to the New Zealand Dairy company at Frankton and preforming the duties typical of that occupation. After eight months and on the daeth of Jack's father, the couple took over the farm at Tarata where they continued for 40 years. Jack and sons John and Gordon operated as a company, farming and developing a fairly large tract of land. With the sale of this land in 1966, each went his own way, Jack and Ruby in the old homestead and John and his wife Helen also on the Tarata farm, Gordon and his family going to Whitianga. In 1970 Ruby and Jack sold their interests at Tarata and retired to Waitara.'
