"Joseph Bedford was a convict per Tortoise arrived Feb 1842.. He served his sentence at Green Ponds, Campbell Town Oatlands Bagdad and Brighton. He was at one time assigned to John Hayes at Bagdad in whose House he later married. (AOT correspondence file) Bedford married Sarah Briggs aged 20 in the House of John Hayes according to the rites of the Congregational Church on 9 Jan 1855 (RGD 48/1855) The witnesses were George Page and Mary Ann Page. George Page, aged 26 married Mary Ann BRIGGS, aged 17 at Brighton on 21 March 1853. The marriage took place at St Marks Pontville and this is the only Church in Tasmania that notes names of parents prior to 1898. The parents of Mary Ann Briggs and I assume by association of Sarah Briggs were Benjamin and Lydia Briggs of Brighton."
