The birth was not registered until the 30th. No father given here, so assumption below is not confirmed. (the date in the body of the certificate is 1878 but this is obviously an error.

NOTE Gordon Cox, the spouse of his daughter, says he was born illegitimately in Wellingborough Work House. Later meail (Dec 2004) says that when he was 9 he was collected by a "uncle Jim" (that would be abt 1908. This Uncle Jim is identified with James Hertbert Bates who was at 37 Cromwell Road in the 1901 census. He is now suspected to be the father of Jesse.. He was born in the workhouse and at least 2 years of his young life was spent in the Workhouse (see the periods in the notes on his mother.

CENSUS 1901 at 65 Little Street, Rushden. page 32, schedule 115. Aged 26, a shoe finisher, born Rushden, living as a boarder with the family of 36 year old Charles Bayes of Irchester (his wife Zelpha was also born there). Her son Jesse aged 2 is also with her.
NOTE Gordon Cox, the spouse of her grand-daughter says that in the 1901 census she was living in Queen Street with her sister Foundah, without her two year old son Jesse. She was also listed as boarding with the Bayes family in Little Street. He lists her as Sarah Jane. In a later email (dec 2004) he says he has details of her excursions in and out of the workhouse over a period of 17 years. See also note on her son. The Workhouse records also records two still births of males in January 1903 and on 14 Nov 1907 for a Jane Clayton. The mother of Leanord James is also listed only as Jane Clayton, so we do not know if these three birth relate to Sarah Jane or not.
NOTE Gordon Cox sent me the dates mentioned above in Jan 2005. In 1896 for the birth and death of Walter she was in the Workhouse for one month. In 1898 for the birth of Jesse she was there for 2 years, and 2 months and 8 days. In 1901 she was there for 4 months. In 1903 nearly a month. In 1904 2 visits totally 5 months, In 1905 2 visits each of over one month. In 1906 she was in for 4 visits totalling over 9 months. In 1907 four visits totalling over 8 months. IN 1908 she was in 5 times, once for 3 mo, the others for very short periods. No admission is should at the end of 1908 but on 1 Jan 1909 Leonard James died there and she was discharged in March 1991, but whether the was in the workhouse all that time is not known.

His mother is named only Jane here, so she might not be the Sarah Jane given here. He was out of and back into the workhouse from the day he was born there to the day her died there at least 5 times, possibly more, for at least 3 months of the 8 months of his life..
