BIRTH from Wellingborough Union Workhouse records supplied by Gordon Cox (Nov 2004). Civil Birth certificate shows same bith place and date with the mother as Sarah Jane Clayton of the same address. The birth was not registered until the 30th. No father given here, so assumption below is not confirmed. (the date in the body of the certificate is 1878 but this is obviously an error.

CENSUS 1901 at 65 Little Street, Rushden. page 32, schedule 115. Aged 2.

NOTE Gordon Cox, the spouse of his daughter, says he was born illegitimately in Wellingborough Work House. Later meail (Dec 2004) says that when he was 9 he was collected by a "uncle Jim" (that would be abt 1908. This Uncle Jim is identified with James Hertbert Bates who was at 37 Cromwell Road in the 1901 census. He is now suspected to be the father of Jesse.. He was born in the workhouse and at least 2 years of his young life was spent in the Workhouse (see the periods in the notes on his mother.

NOTE Gordon Cox, the spouse of her grand-daughter says that in the 1901 census she was living in Queen Street with her sister Foundah, without her two year old son Jesse. She was also listed as boarding with the Bayes family in Little Street. He lists her as Sarah Jane. In a later email (dec 2004) he says he has details of her excursions in and out of the workhouse over a period of 17 years. See also note on her son. The Workhouse records also records two still births of males in January 1903 and on 14 Nov 1907 for a Jane Clayton. The mother of Leanord James is also listed only as Jane Clayton, so we do not know if these three birth relate to Sarah Jane or not.

In 1898 for the birth of Jesse she was there for 2 years, and 2 months and 8 days. In 1901 she was there for 4 months. In 1903 nearly a month.
