FATAL ACCIDENT Several reports in at least four different papers record his falling from a load of hay and landing on his head then falling on his back, causing a broken spine and paralysis on 31 October 1866. This happened two miles from Gawler on his property. He was not espected to live and died almost three weeks later. He left a wife and large family, "but they are mostly grown up and in good circumstances". "He appeared throughout cheerful and resigned" according to one report. (reports quoted by Josie in an email July 2002).

He was suffering Dyspepsia and was discharged on the 11th February, 1876. No other person than Caleb has been found to whom this would apply.
NOTE (June 1892) Again from the Adelaide Hospital records - John Summerton who arrived on the Success was discharged from the hospital 21st June, 1892. His injury was an old injury to the head. His age was recorded as 58 and his last known address was Bimbowie. Again no other person than Caleb has been found to whom this would apply.
NOTE This record found by Josie is from Destitute Asylum record. "Caleb Summerton ; 58 years; arrived per the Success; resided in Australian colonies 44 years; arrived in South Australia 1848; last place of residence - Port Augusta; occupation - labourer or Bushman; relatives in the colony - brother George Summerton, farmer Willochra, who will not assist in the case; nationality - English; religion - Church of England; recommendation - Dr Markham, Port Augusta; Reason for requiring admission: This man was sent up from Port Augusta Hospital on Medical Certificate "suffering from debility". There does not appear to be much the matter with him, or any necessity for sending him here from Port Augusta at the expense of this department. Date leaving - 8th November, 1892 ; where to go - To look for work."
