NOTE details supplied by Isabelle MacGregor Tew, his daughter, and by Grace Logan Ross his granddaughter.

BIRTH at 9 p.m., at 12 Claypole, Perth, the home of David Banks, his uncle. His father gave his address as 9 Scott Street, Perth.. No. 646 in the Perth registry. Namerd as George McGregor Angus (illigitimate), The birth was not registered until 7 days after probably because everyone was occupied with the burial of his mother.

NOTE he acquired his surname of McGregor from his adoptive parents. His mother died within 5 hours of his birth. He lived with the McGregor family in Perth, but after his marriage re-contacted his natural father.

CENSUS 1891: at 25 Scott Street, Perth (LDS film 020874) parish 387, enumerator 16, page 9 household 49. Age 1. Living with Thomas Angus' family and Janet's husband Lauchlan McGregor.

CENSUS 1901, at 73 Scott Street, Perth, ref 387/00 021/000 page 46, schedule 257. Age 11, a scholar.

MARRIAGE at the Grange, Manse, Cambuslang. Witnesses were George Banks and Anna Wood. Aged 25, a grocers Assistant and bachelor. He gave his residence as 25 Burnside Terrace, Flemington, Cambuslang. Named as "George McGregor Angus, known as George McGregor".

MARRIAGE from certificate. At The Manse, Hallside, Cambuslange. Aged 26, a sewing machinist, and spinster. She had been living at 7 Mitchell St Rutherglen. Her sister Anna was a witness.


William Angus-4

BIRTH no 14 for Abernethy (parish 326) of 1861. On film 0224100. At 10.55 pm in Abernethy (full address not given). His father is listed as not present.

CENSUS 1861: Age 7 days. (recorded by Grace) In registration district 326, (presumably at Abernethy).

CENSUS 1871 at the South Side, Abernethy, Perthshire. Ref 326 001 pg 8 schedule 42. Age 10, a scholar.

CENSUS INDEX 1881: at Stirling, with his father, ref 490 15 17. He is listed as a Salmon Fisher, born Abernethy, but his age is shown as 24 (which is higher than it should be, but his father's age fits, so this is almost certainly the correct record).

CENSUS 1891, not found except that there was a 28 year old general albourer on a farm at Dull, Perthshire (Haugh Brae census ref. 324 007 page5, scheduyle 21. The birthplace given here was Forteviot which is south west of Perth about the same distance as Abernethy is south east. No other William Angus in the right age range is in Perthshire.

NOTE when he registered the birth of his son George, he listed his occupation as Private, Scotts Greys, and gave his address as 9 Scott Street, Perth.

MARRIAGE at the United Presbyterian Church in Perth. He gave his adress as 19 Scott Street, and his occupation as labourer. He was a bachelor. They were married at 19 Scott Street according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church.

CENSUS 1901 at 82 Reform Place, Perth (West Church). Reference 387/00 021/00 page 28, schedule 164. Age 40. a gas stoker.

NOTE Isabella McGregor(Tew) says she remembers him when she was very small, living in Edinburgh. At that time he had a daughter Jenny, but who his wife had been is not known. He was a private in the Scots Greys.

BIRTH: from civil certificate (film 224103 in parish 387/1 reference 573). The time is stated but the writing is very hard to read, I suspect it is 8.30 am. The place of birth is 14 Kinross St, Perth, though the street name may be misread.

DEATH was from a Pulmonary Embolism at 1.40 am. This was less than five hours after the birth of her son. She was listed as a millworker in his birth certificate.

MARRIAGE from certificate from Dennistoun, parish 644/03, no. 198. at 30 Wellfield Street, Glasgow after the forms of the Church of Scotland. He was a journeyman cartwright, a bachelor, aged 22 of 30 Wellfield Street Glasgow. The witnesses were Donal Swanson and Annabella Wood.

BIRTH from civil certificate (the copy of the register on the Internet is a very poor one). Time unreadable, place 275 Springburn Road. The birth was not registered until December (possibly 1st).

MARRIAGE: date and place given on William's birth record. It cannot be found in the Scottish CD of old marriage records.

CENSUS 1851: from film 1042259, enumerator 7, page 3, household 13. Age 23 no occupation shown, though his parents and younger siblings are listed as hand loom weavers. He birthplace is listed as Abernethy, Perthshire which is that for all of the family except his father whose birthplace is listed as Longforgan, Perthshire.

CENSUS 1861: Age 33. (recorded by Grace) In registration district 326, (presumably at Abernethy). Occupation given seven days earlier for William's birth record as a Boatman.

CENSUS 1871 at the Bathephson Fishing Lodge, Rhynd, Perthshire. Ref 391 001 pg 8 schedule 34. Age 43, a salmon fisher. His son George and four other people from Abernethy are with him (two pairs father and son, and two brothers).

CENSUS 1881: from index under ref 387 16 17, his wife is shown as head of the house, married (not widow). He was in Stirling (60 Lower Bridge St), and is listed as a Salmon Fisher of Abernethy, aged 53. His son is with him.

NOTE 1886 listed as a gas stoker at the marriage of Janet.

CENSUS 1891: Perth (LDS film 020874) enumerator 16, page 9 household 49, at 25 Scott Street. age 63, occupation gas stoker. There is a dressmaker from Renfrew lodging with the family, probably a friend of daughter Betsy.

NOTE: Longforgan is across the Firth of Tay from Abernethy, about 25 km by road, half that by water. It is also possible that the baptismal record is not for this George Angus, in which case the father's name is incorrect.

I assume that this is her second marriage but if the 1881 census record is correct then this is in error. This lady was possibly the widow ad Lathalmond Lime Works, Dunfermline, Fife in 1881 aged 67, a widow born Dunfirmline. (GRO 424, dist 25, page 7)

CENSUS 1881 a Helen Hutchesson aged 72 was at Cargill, Perthshire. GRO 338, district 4, page 6. A widow, born Muthly, Perthshire There was an Alexander aged 35, unmarried born Ringwood Perthshire with her.

She did not sign, and her name is given as Magert Crows here (though the index suggests it should be Margaret). Lewis Crow was one of the witnesses, possibly a brother.

KNOWN: from son's baptismal record. From his son's marriage record he was a weaver.

NOTE: Grace Ross in a letter of July 1998 says that his grand-daughter's (Janet Banks) death was registered by Alex Banks, it may have been him, but he also had a grandson named Alex, who was Janet's brother..

MARRIAGE from Scotlands People ref 387/00 031*, frame 8075. From FHL film no. 1040164, she was listed as of the East Church Parish of Perth, and her father's details were given. The marriage took place in the West Church.

KNOWN: from son's baptismal record she is listed as Robinson, but on her son's marriage record her maiden name is clearly Robertson, and she was deceased.

DEATH: before son's marriage in 1857, and if the census entry is for her widower husband then before 1851.
